Getting Closer Despite the Distance
Long distance. Two little words that can equal big problems. No worries ladies, I am here to not only give you hope, but to also give you tips on how to make long distance relationships work. I recently met a young couple, Mike and Nikki, who have been going strong for three and a half years. They shared some great insights on how they maintain the romance when the space between is vast.
First off, look at this as an opportunity to really get established in your career. You can work those extra shifts and take those business trips that might become harder to do once you relocate to the same zip code. Next, always keep up the communication. Calling each other every night before you go to bed and giving each other an in depth rundown of the highs and lows of your day keeps each other in the loop and feeling connected. Thoughtful text messages and emails are also a nice touch throughout a busy day. It’s a short and sweet means to show your sweetie that you care. The most important element is seeing one another whenever you possibly can. So budget in trips and plan ahead. Whether you visit each other’s respective city or find an in between location for a weekend getaway, in person rendezvous must be a priority. If the time between visits is filled with thoughtful connections and daily briefings, then your weekend won’t be about playing catch-up, it’ll be about getting caught up in the romance.
Nikki said, “Absence definitely makes the heart grow fonder. I miss him like crazy when we are apart, but that overwhelming giddiness that I still get when my plane is about to land goes to show that I still care for him now just as much as I did when we met. It isn’t always about finding the most convenient relationship. It is more about finding something that you are happy in”. So ladies, just remember the best things in life are not always the easiest to maintain. Do the work now, and later the relationship will be that much sweeter.
